Google’s version of AI-driven search is now available. This morning, the company declared that Google Search Generative Experience (SGE) and other Search Labs will be accessible to US users. If you haven’t already, you must join the waitlist and wait until you receive an email letting you know it is your turn.

Google SGE, which was unveiled at Google I/O 2023 earlier this month, is the company’s addition of conversational AI to the standard search interface. If you’ve used Bing AI before, you may anticipate a similar yet distinct product. In contrast to Bing’s chatbot field, Google’s AI-powered search uses the same input field you’re used to, as observed by Cherlynn Low in Engadget’s SGE preview.

The generative AI results will then show up in a shaded region above the typical web results but below the search bar (and sponsored results). A button to expand the snapshot and add cards displaying the sourced articles is located on the upper right of the AI results. Finally, there is a button underneath the results that you can tap to ask additional questions.

Google describes the snapshot as “key information to consider, with links to dig deeper.” Think of it like a slice of Bard injected (somewhat) seamlessly into the Google search you already know.

Google is also making other Search Labs accessible, such as Add to Sheets and Code Tips (both now available only in the US). With the help of big language models, Code Tips “harnesses the power to provide pointers for writing code faster and smarter.” It enables prospective programmers to ask how-to queries regarding tools (Docker, Git, shells), algorithms, and programming languages (C, C++, Go, Java, JavaScript, Kotlin, Python, and TypeScript).

Add to Sheets, on the other hand, allows you to immediately insert search results into Google’s spreadsheet application. You can choose which of your recent papers you want to link the search result to by tapping the Sheets icon to the left of a search result.

You can tap the Labs icon (a beaker symbol) on a new tab in Chrome for desktop or in the Google search app on Android or iOS if you aren’t already on the Search Labs queue. You might have to wait since the corporation hasn’t said when or how widely access would be granted.
