Google Voice Can Now Switch Between Cellular & Wi-Fi During a Call

With the innovative VoIP calling service Google Voice, you can make almost free calls to anyone in the US and Canada. This year, the service received numerous upgrades, including Smart Replies and the ability to make calls online with just one click or tap. Google has now released an upgrade for Voice that utilizes "intelligent network switching," according to the firm, to greatly improve call quality. Older versions of Voice would choose the network when the call is placed and stick with it for the duration, which meant that calls could be dropped if circumstances changed, as Google notes in its Workspace Updates blog. With the new update, if audio quality is degraded on the current data stream during a call, Google Voice will attempt to transition between Wi-Fi and cellular data automatically. Customers of Google Voice have started receiving the functionality as of Friday, so it's probable that many are already taking advantage of the performance improvement. Furthermore, this function is open to almost all users because there are no admin limitations or a special toggle to turn it on. Although the extremely small subset of Chromebook owners who use the Voice app will want to report to us on their experience, this functionality is definitely intended for mobile users. Even though Google Voice is a fairly specialized service, we're shocked it took so long to implement this feature. Considering Google Voice was launched all the way back in 2019.  The business shut down the traditional Voice online interface earlier this year, forcing longtime users to switch to a new one and giving up several important functions in the process. Since its launch ten years ago, Google Voice has not in any way supplanted traditional mobile carriers, but it has been a fantastic supplementary network option for users of Google accounts.
