According to a report, Google is discontinuing Driving Mode, a standalone Assistant-powered dashboard that provides on-the-go access to audio settings, contacts, directions, and other shortcuts.
Google is retiring the function on November 21st after first announcing it during I/O in 2019. The feature wasn't actually released until last year.
Not to be confused with the Driving Mode feature incorporated into Google Maps, which launches as navigation begins, is the standalone version of Driving Mode.
Before even releasing the standalone Driving Mode, Google included Assistant Driving Mode in Maps, as Mishaal Rahman of Esper notes.
The standalone version is only accessible by voice commands like "Hey Google, activate Driving Mode" or by tapping the Driving Mode shortcut on your phone's home screen.
After Driving Mode shuts down, you may still use its functions by launching Google Maps' navigation, which is probably what most users have been doing already.
For individuals who might not have a car with a digital navigation hub that supports Android Auto, its closure is quite disappointing. With Android 12, Google removed the "Android Auto for Phone Screens" app, and the standalone Driving Mode service was intended to take its place.
