Gotham Knights Game Faces Piracy Patch

On PC, Gotham Knights received its first significant post-launch patch yesterday. The update's goal was to fix online multiplayer errors and squash some bugs. Unfortunately, it also temporarily disabled the Denuvo DRM protections in the Batman game, leaving it vulnerable to pirates. That's one way to catch them off guard. The PC patch for the struggling co-op adventure was released last night, and game crackers quickly discovered that the new build released on Steam was missing Denuvo. The news spread quickly on sites like the CrackWatch subreddit, leading some to believe that Warner Bros. intentionally removed the DRM. It had not happened. Gotham Knights According to SteamDB, a new build with the Denuvo anti-tamper protection back in place was released about 14 hours later, but clearly, the damage had been done. It's unlikely that pirates will be able to participate in the game's multiplayer, which is a focal point of the loot-based brawler, and pirates will not be able to enjoy future patch fixes or content updates. They'll almost certainly have free reign over the single-player campaign now. Some PC users are opposed to Denuvo protection because it restricts how they can store and play games. It's also widely assumed to have a negative impact on the performance of PC games that use it. The DRM is frequently removed by game publishers weeks or months after release, especially if and when it is eventually "cracked" by hackers. It is rarely dropped by accident and then restored. Gotham Knights The bigger problem with Gotham Knights is that it's just not that good, especially for a game that's been in development for years, is one of the first $70 new-gen-exclusive titles, and is clearly inspired by the much better Arkham trilogy of Batman games. While it is unclear what new content Warner Bros. Montréal has in the works, it has promised a much larger performance update in the near future. That patch will also target consoles, addressing some of the framerate drops on the PS5 and Xbox Series X/S. While Gotham Knights are controversially locked at 30 frames per second on consoles, it frequently drops below that during certain scenes and when patrolling Gotham with large mobs of enemies. However, as Digital Foundry has reported, there are numerous performance issues on PC as well. They, too, will hopefully be addressed.
