Here's why King Charles won't strip away the Sussexes of their titles

King Charles is incredibly unlikely to ever depose the Sussexes of their titles, according to royal sources, regardless of how tense things become or what is ultimately said in Thursday's second installment of the Netflix docuseries "Harry & Meghan." The late Queen Elizabeth II presented the titles of Duke and Duchess of Sussex to Prince Harry and Meghan Markle on their wedding day, May 19, 2018. However, after the first three episodes of the Netflix series, which was released last week, in which Prince Harry and Meghan Markle revealed some more details about their dismal life behind palace walls, critics of the couple have claimed that they should be stripped of their titles. In a tweet, Piers Morgan urged, "King Charles needs to strip these two poisonous rats of all remaining titles and ties to the Royal Family and needs to do it fast before they destroy the monarchy.” However, a royal source told Page Six, "Stripping their title is not something the king would likely ever consider … mostly because it would be too petty and punitive.” Aside from that, the source continued, "It would only lead to the Sussexes claiming that it was a retaliatory action and proof they were never wanted in the royal family.”

More details

Meghan Markle, 41, says in a new teaser for the Netflix series released on Monday, "I wasn’t thrown to the wolves, I was being fed to the wolves." Prince Harry continues, "They were happy to lie to protect my brother [Prince William]. They were never willing to tell the truth to protect us.” The identity of the "they" Harry, 38, refers to is not immediately apparent from the clip, but as Page Six has reported, the pair will discuss being intimidated by royal staff. One royal watcher commented, "Given that the Sussexes called the show simply ‘Harry & Meghan,’ they should take it upon themselves to stop using their titles. They’re sending mixed messages otherwise." "Do they want to be normal, albeit extremely powerful people — or do they want to live in the shadows of their former royal lives?” continued the royal watcher. "Harry could relinquish his princely title if he wishes, just as Princess Patricia of Connaught, a granddaughter of Queen Victoria, did when she married a commoner just over a century ago.” In other news, Harry and Meghan are believed to want their children, Archie, 3, and Lilibet, 1, to have the use of their royal titles. But King Charles is reportedly waiting until the Netflix series and Harry's memoir, "Spare," which is due on January 10, are both released. On the other hand, no matter what happens in the upcoming weeks, the Sussexes will still be present during Charles' coronation in May, as Page Six has reported.
