HMD Announces Its Nokia Series -“Most Eco-Friendly Smartphone”

HMD will launch three new smartphones, the Nokia G60 5G, C31, and X30 5G, today and claims that the X30 5G is the “most eco-friendly smartphone” the company has ever produced. The devices are different from the ones HMD has sold in the US so far and focus mainly on Europe. Consumers can subscribe to the “Circular,” HMD’s subscription service at a monthly fee, and receive incentives to use the Nokia X30 5G. The Nokia X30 5G includes a 100% recycled aluminum frame, a 65% recycled plastic back panel, and ships in a 70% recycled paper box. HMD will support it with OS upgrades for 3 years, monthly security updates, and provides a standard 3-year warranty.

Although HMD’s efforts are appreciable, smartphone specialists Fairphone offers better services. The Fairphone 4 has a 100% recycled plastic back cover and tin solder uses fair trade gold and conflict-free tungsten. Moreover, Fairphone offers five years of security and software updates, including repairable parts, removable batteries, and other easy-to-remove parts. HMD’s Nokia X30 5G does not have these features. HMD’s product marketing global head, Adam Ferguson informed The Verge that it initially focused on plastic and aluminum usage as a huge amount of materials are used in manufacturing smartphones. He said, “Our main focus is tackling what we see as the two largest elements that we can make the biggest difference on will have the biggest impact on e-waste.” nokia smartphone series

Furthermore, the Nokia X30 5G is powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 695 processor with 6 or 8GB RAM (you can choose), 128 or 256GB of storage, a 6.43-inch 1080p OLED display with a 90Hz refresh rate, a 50-megapixel primary camera with a 13-megapixel ultrawide, and a 16-megapixel selfie camera. The smartphone will show up this month with a starting price of £399 (€529). HMD’s new subscription service Circular will provide the X30 5G at £25 a month with a £30 start-up fee in the UK. So, instead of purchasing a phone outright, consumers can rent their smartphone, using a subscription contract for a minimum of 3-months. They can return the gadget as a reusable or recyclable device, at the end of the subscription. Well, that's the catch!

The company would even offer rewards for using devices longer by providing them credits, that they can invest in charities. Moreover, the Nokia G60 5G, a £249 (€319) smartphone includes Qualcomm Snapdragon 695 processor and offers a 3-year warranty, with security and Android updates. It features 4GB RAM and 64GB of expandable storage, a 6.58 inches LCD instead of OLED, with a 120Hz refresh rate, a 50-megapixel main camera, a 5-megapixel ultrawide, and a 2-megapixel depth sensor. The Circular offers £12.50 a month with a £30 set-up fee for its subscription. Finally, the Nokia C31 smartphone (€129) has a 5,050mAh battery offering 3-days of battery life. It is powered by a Unisoc 9863A1 processor, with 3 or 4GB RAM, 32 and 128GB of expandable storage, 6.7 inches screen (720p), and three rear cameras with a 13-megapixel main sensor.
