Honda's Accord Will Offer Built-In Google Support

In order to support native Android apps and over-the-air (OTA) software upgrades, Google built-in integration will be supported for the first time in Honda's upcoming Accord model. It will come as standard equipment in the 2023 Accord's highest Touring model, which goes on sale early the following year. If you've never heard of "Google built-in," it's only because Android Automotive, the company's car operating system, goes by that moniker. It makes sense that the less ambiguous "Google built-in" looks to be the brand's preferred term moving forward given that Google also has a similarly named phone-to-car connection system called Android Auto (akin to Apple's CarPlay). Honda has not yet indicated whether Google will be included into any of their other vehicles. Previously, the automaker had incorporated bespoke (and now out-of-date) Android software in some of its vehicles, but now it is fully utilizing Google's solutions to handle all the challenging infotainment issues. Google Maps will be used for navigation, voice controls will be able to adjust the passenger air temperature, and music apps will be easily accessible. Honda joined Google's infotainment platform last year, announcing at the time that it will begin integrating it into vehicles in 2022. It's larger than Volvo's 9-inch infotainment screen in the XC40, another car with Google built-in, and the largest infotainment screen Honda has ever produced. In an interview with Automotive News, Jay Joseph, vice president of CASE and Energy at American Honda Motor Co., stated that the OTA upgrades for Honda vehicles will "add function two, three, or eight years after it's been delivered." According to Joseph, "[it] can dramatically alter the dynamics of the ownership experience and the used-vehicle market." For Honda and many other automakers, adding functionality and enhancing owner experiences through software upgrades after the vehicle has been purchased would be a somewhat novel concept. With dozens of features added throughout the course of the life of each of its vehicles, Tesla is setting the standard in this market, from allowing its cameras to record security footage to creating a video game library. Before Apple can gain support for its own forthcoming system, Google is getting ready to dominate alongside GM, Volvo, Polestar, and shortly Ford and BMW.
