Do Metaverse Effects On Mental Health – Know Here-GadgetAny
metaverse elfects on human brain

Metaverse is a virtual world created by CEO Mark Zuckerberg. His vision is to integrate gaming, social media, augmented reality, and cryptocurrency into the virtual platform. As Meta’s webpage states, “Metaverse is the next evolution of social connection.” Additionally, many tech giants have already paved the way into a metaverse comprised future. However, the growing involvement of people has led experts to question the metaverse effects on mental health.

The debate on how new technologies affect the mental well-being of human beings is an ongoing conflict. According to The Wall Street Journal, these concerns were pointless since genetics and socioeconomic were the primary reasons behind a person’s mental health. Hence, many experts believe that, like all new technologies that came before, metaverse too will integrate into our lives easily. However, some insist that the metaverse is an uncharted and revolutionary world, which will pose new challenges.

What do the experts say on metaverse effects on mental health?

According to an article published in Psychology Today, overuse of digital technology leads to various mental disorders. These include depression, psychoticism, and paranoid ideation. Also, it might lead to a person preferring a virtual space compared to reality. Rachel Kowert, a researcher, remarked that it could “negatively impact a person’s ability to engage in non-virtual life.”

Likewise, Jeremy Bailenson of Stanford Univerity stated it might become challenging when people spend a lot of time in a perfect and ideal world.

However, Nick Allen, a psychology professor, says the context of the digital world is essential. He believes that it is significant to consider if the time spent in the metaverse promotes or hinders mental health.

He noted that “A young person who may be LGBT and finds an online context where they can feel a sense of social support would benefit mentally from using the metaverse.”

In addition, Nick also agreed that “if using metaverse technologies replaces non-online behaviors that are healthy and supportive to mental health, they can be harmful.”

Metaverse might help certain people

On another note, Dr, Daria Kuss of Nottingham Trent University, believes that “virtual reality exposure therapy can be a fantastic tool to help individuals affected by various phobias.” He added that metaverse could cure mental health issues like eating disorders, depression, and PTSD.

Anna Bailie, a Ph.D. student, remarked, “The interactive nature of the metaverse could provide a different arena for online therapy. She further stated that “It may even improve access to therapy for disabled people with a better, more life-like experience.”

However, she also noted that it will “divide people further in their access to technology and therapeutic support.”

Another expert, Peter Etchells, a psychology professor, added that “If developed ethically, metaverse can be good for keeping us connected.”

However, he declared that focusing only on the negative metaverse effects on mental health might lead to us missing a “tremendous opportunity.”
