The new AppleTV 4K has only been on the market for about a week, and we're still learning more about the major improvements Apple made with this year's revision. The A15 Bionic chip powers the new Apple TV 4K, and new in-depth testing from FlatpanelsHD provides an interesting look at how it compares to gaming systems like the Playstation 4 and Playstation 5.
According to FlatpanelsHD tests, this year's Apple TV 4K is 40% faster than the original Apple TV with an A12 chip inside. Apple claims that it is 50% faster, but this could simply be due to changes in testing methodology. This year's TV lacks an internal fan, resulting in a sleeker and lighter design with less throttling.
Another difference this year is that the new Apple TV 4K does not have an internal fan, due to a smaller and lighter design. What effect does this have on performance, cooling, and throttling? The new Apple TV 4K throttles less than its predecessor: Apple has tried and failed for years to change the Apple TV into a gaming device. These tests demonstrate that the problem isn't one of performance, but rather one of a lack of broad support from developers and game studios. These tests reveal that little has changed in that regard, but the performance of available games continues to impress.
FlatpanelsHD's full review examines the success of games such as Beyond a Steel Sky, Sayonara Wild Hearts, The Pathless, and others.
