How Scary Games Use Light, Shadows, Reflections, and Terror to Create Horror

The Callisto Protocol is being developed by Striking Distance Studios. This week we take a look at the look of the game, including the lighting and visuals. In our previous preview, we walked through some behind-the-scenes previews from the studio. During the game's preproduction phase, the team bombarded Glen with photos that show both visual examples of how they wanted the architecture and monsters to appear, as well as interesting and effective lighting techniques. Games can convey themes and emotions to a player by using limited color or emphasizing specific imagery. The designers emerged from preproduction with an extremely detailed art bible that served as the guiding force behind the game's visuals, thanks to Glen's horror-filled imagination and artistic skill. These were realized in photorealistic 2020-era photorealism using the Unreal Engine, which can now create truly complex and stunning lighting on PCs and consoles. And the outcomes are terrifying.
