How to Enable Background Sounds on Mac to Reduce Distractions & Stay Focused?

Background Sounds are a new accessibility feature introduced by Apple in macOS Ventura that is meant to help you stay focused, and calm, and minimize distractions. Continue reading to discover how it works. There is a feature in iOS 15 and later that allows you to play ambient soundscapes in the background on your apple phone, and these sounds are now available on Macs as well, thanks to the release of macOS Ventura. All the sounds can be set to be played in the background to cover up unpleasant side or external noise, and the sounds can be mixed in with or buried beneath other audio and system sounds.

Steps To use Background Sounds option in macOS 13 & later

  • In the menu bar of your Mac, click on Apple.
  • From the dropdown menu, choose System Settings.
  • Choose Accessibility from the settings sidebar, then Audio from the "Hearing" sub-menu.

  • Choose... in the "Background Sounds" section.

  • Click the button to download next to the sound you wish to use.

  • And once the audio file has been downloaded, click Done.

  • To begin playing the ambient soundscape, turn on the switch next to Background Sounds.
The volume slider in the Background Sounds menu allows the user to control the volume of the background sound independently. It's also worth noting that there's a way to Turn off background sounds when your Mac isn't in use, which will turn off the audio whenever the Lock Screen or screen saver is active.
