Installing an M.2 SSD in PS5: A Step-by-Step Guide

The PS5 is an impressive console, but its storage space is limited. While the system claims to have 825GB of usable space, it only offers 677.2GB of storage for games after accounting for the OS and essential files. As games continue to grow in size, you will likely run out of room. Installing an M.2 SSD in your PS5 is the best solution to overcome this storage limitation. This article provides a step-by-step guide to installing an M.2 SSD in your PS5.

Why You Need an M.2 SSD for Your PS5

With the best SSDs for PS5, you can add more space to your console and have enough room for larger games. Using an internal NVMe SSD is preferable to using an external hard drive, which only allows you to store games to install later.

Requirements for PS5 SSD Installation

Before you begin, ensure that you have a Gen 4.0 M.2 NVMe SSD with a sequential speed of at least 5,500 MB/s. Also, a PS5 SSD heatsink is necessary for effective heat dissipation. You can either buy an M.2 SSD with a cooling structure, or attach a heatsink yourself, which can also act as the M.2 cover.

Here are Sony's standards for PS5 storage requirements:

  • Interface: PCIe Gen4 x4 M.2 NVMe SSD
  • Capacity: 250GB – 4TB
  • Cooling structure: A cooling structure is necessary for using an M.2 SSD with your PS5 console, such as a heatsink. You can attach one to your M.2 SSD yourself, either in a single-sided format or double-sided format. Some M.2 SSDs come with cooling structures built in.
  • Sequential read speed: 5,500 MB/s or faster is recommended.
  • Module width: 22mm width (25mm width is not supported)
  • Form Factor: M.2 type 2230, 2242, 2260, 2280 and 22110
  • Socket type: Socket 3 (Key M)
  • Total size including cooling structure: smaller than 110mm (L) x 25mm (W) x 11.25mm (H)

Before You Begin the Installation

To install the M.2 SSD into your PS5, you will need a few items:
  • The M.2 SSD
  • A #1 Phillips screwdriver (size 01) to remove the M.2 port cover
  • A flathead screwdriver to secure and remove the stand (if mounted horizontally or vertically)
It is recommended to have the PS5 console on a flat wooden surface with good lighting.

Removing the Stand from Your PS5

Using a flathead screwdriver, remove the stand that comes with your PS5 console. This is necessary to access what's underneath the side panels. Simply turn the large screw and remove the stand.

Opening Up the PS5

To access the M.2 port, you will need to take the disc-drive side cover off. Firmly grip the top left corner and raise it up. Then, with your other hand, slide the cover to the right to disengage the plastic clip from the steel frame.

Installing the M.2 SSD

After removing the side panel, you can remove the M.2 port cover with the Phillips head screwdriver. You will then notice a space for your NVMe SSD. Install your chosen SSD and secure it in place. The PNY XLR8 Gaming Kit for PS5 is a great option as it features a standalone heatsink designed for the console.
