Source: India TV News Google Docs is a versatile and powerful tool for creating and sharing documents. One of its useful features is the ability to create a table of contents. This feature can save you time and frustration when navigating lengthy documents. Here is a step-by-step guide on how to create a table of contents in Google Docs for both desktop and iOS versions.

Creating a Table of Contents in Google Docs on Desktop

  1. Open Google Docs on your desktop computer.
  2. Open a document that contains multiple headings. If the document does not have headings, you cannot create a table of contents.
  3. Place your cursor on the page where you want to insert the table of contents. In this example, we will place the table of contents after the introduction and before the first heading.
  4. Go to the "Insert" menu at the top of the page.
  5. Scroll down to "Table of contents" at the bottom of the menu and hover your cursor over it. A sub-menu will appear with two table of content styles: "numbered" and "linked."
  6. Select the type of table of contents you want to insert. The numbered table of contents adds the page number next to each heading, while the linked table of contents adds links to each heading for quick access.
  7. If you add more headings to the document after inserting the table of contents, you can refresh the table of contents to add the new headings. Simply click the refresh icon to the left of the table of contents.

  4. Tap the plus icon at the top of the screen to open the "Insert" menu.
  5. Select "Table of contents" from the menu.
  6. Choose the type of table of contents you want to insert: "With page numbers" or "With blue links."

Tips for Using Tables of Contents in Google Docs

Here are some tips for using tables of contents effectively in Google Docs:
  • Make sure your document has headings. A table of contents relies on headings to work correctly. Use headings to break up your document into sections.
  • Use the "Heading" formatting option for headings. When you use the "Heading" formatting option for a line of text, Google Docs recognizes it as a heading and includes it in the table of contents.
  • Update the table of contents when you add or remove headings. If you make changes to your document, such as adding or removing headings, make sure to update the table of contents to reflect the changes.
  • Use the "Linked" table of contents for longer documents. The linked table of contents is helpful for longer documents because it allows readers to quickly jump to specific sections.
A table of contents can be a useful tool for navigating lengthy Google Docs. By following these simple steps, you can easily create a table of contents for your document on both desktop and iOS versions of Google Docs.
