How to Use Your iPhone LiDAR to Quickly Measure Someone's Height?

Since many of us have been using iPhones since they first became available, we are well aware of all of their "hidden" or "secret" capabilities. However, I occasionally discover something new about iOS. This time, it's a function that enables you to take a person's measurements instantaneously using only your iPhone's camera. This function isn't brand-new, but it's only accessible on a few iPhone models, notably "Pro" versions. You have a people-measuring instrument right in your pocket if you own an iPhone 12 Pro, 12 Pro Max, 13, 13 Pro, 14, or 14 Pro Max. But you don't, even if you own the newest iPhone 14 or 14 Plus. (I find it odd that a brand-new iPhone lacks a feature that the two-year-old iPhone 12 Pro has.) How to use your iPhone to measure Height?

  • Open the Measure app on your iPhone, frame your friend in the camera viewfinder, and make sure their full body is visible to begin measuring them.
  • Once they are in line, Measure will calculate their height and put a count next to their head. Then you can take a picture of your subject and their estimated height by pressing Measure's shutter button.
  • Before you ask, the feature may be made to function in a mirror. But the results are inaccurate because you have to stand so far back. Zero people will understand the statement "I'm 3'10" in a mirror.

How iPhones use LiDAR?

Apple probably couldn't bring this function to non-Pro iPhones even if it wanted to because the measure feature is hardware-based and depends on the LiDAR sensor integrated into the Pro iPhones' cameras. If you possess one, you have probably noticed this sensor as the seemingly pointless dot on the iPhone camera housing. By projecting light pulses into the space, this LiDAR sensor enables your iPhone to map its surroundings, making it a potent tool for augmented reality. Your iPhone calculates the duration of the procedure when the light pulses hit the room and then hit the LiDAR sensor once again. When a person is standing in front of the camera from head to toe, such a sensor can be used, among other things, to measure them quickly. But the Camera app doesn't have this feature.
