Image credit : Investing News Network Machine learning systems fuel ChatGPT, the immensely popular AI chatbot, yet those systems are instructed by human workers, many of whom aren't paid very well. According to a recent NBC News article, the startup OpenAI, which powers ChatGPT, has been hiring a large number of American contractors to help it with the crucial task of data labelling, which involves teaching ChatGPT's software to better respond to user requests. The reward for completing this crucial task? $15 is an exhilarating hourly rate.

“We are grunt workers, but there would be no AI language systems without it,” one worker, Alexej Savreux, told NBC. “You can design all the neural networks you want, you can get all the researchers involved you want, but without labelers, you have no ChatGPT. You have nothing.”
