iCloud Backups Will Be Encrypted End-To-End by Apple

For users concerned about their security, the only local iTunes and Mac backups are available because there are no full end-to-end encrypted cloud backups for Apple devices. That is now starting to alter. "Advanced Data Protection for iCloud" is one of the new security improvements that Apple revealed today. The new feature enables end-to-end encryption for the majority of your iCloud data, including device backups, Messages, iCloud Drive, Notes, Photos, Reminders, Safari bookmarks, Siri shortcuts, Voice Memos, and Wallet Passes. Some information is already end-to-end encrypted, including passwords stored in Keychain and health-related data. No one, not even governments or Apple, can access your data while it is end-to-end encrypted. Currently, only iCloud Mail, Contacts, and Calendar are fully encrypted. Due to "the necessity to interoperate with the worldwide email, contacts, and calendar systems," according to Apple, this is the case. Many individuals use third-party mail clients with iCloud Mail, which would require additional software or keys to continue working. The most well-liked alternative if that worries you is Proton. end-to-end encrypted   It's important not to confuse the option for encrypted Messages backups with full end-to-end encrypted messaging offered by Signal. Since Advanced Data Protection is an optional feature, most of the individuals you communicate with probably won't have it turned on, but Apple will securely backup your copies of messages and conversations. There would still be an unencrypted copy of a particular conversation from the other participants if Apple experienced a security breach or was unable to comply with a government request for user data (under the PRISM program, for instance). You must activate Advanced Data Protection on your own when it becomes available because it is not automatically pushed out to anyone (before the end of the year in the United States). Apple cannot assist you in recovering your data if you lose your local key, which is necessary for end-to-end encryption. Even though it's unpleasant, it makes sense that not everyone would have access to the greatest level of protection. Even if not everyone can or wants to maintain a separate key for accessing their data, it will eventually be an option.
