ESC Key by Vivaan Singh (aka Designmaybe)
With its distinctively designed form that is both ergonomic and artistically meaningful, the ESC keycap from Vivaan Singh (aka Designmaybe), created as a submission to the Render Weekly Design Challenge, takes the phrase escape rather literally.
Unlike a typical concave keycap, Vivaan’s ESC key has a distorted surface that makes it appear as though the key is sliding down a rabbit hole. Finding the necessary retreat “can get really frustrating,” Vivaan observes. The ESC key is a great reminder for you to indulge in some fantasy of your own, simply to spice up life a little.
The ESC keycap does a great job of communicating its meaning without drawing attention to itself. The keycap has a continuous top surface that abruptly ends at one corner, resembling a waterfall. The word “esc” printed on the keycap also warps, adding to the deception!
The ESC keycap has the same outside appearance as a regular keycap with the SA R1 design. This enables it to seamlessly blend in with the mechanical keyboard’s keys while still standing out just enough to catch your notice. Your finger can tell when it is resting on or pressing the escape key even when you aren’t looking at the keycap because of its distinctive form.
The ESC Key was developed in collaboration with the Australian keyboard and keycap manufacturer HIBI as part of an Instagram design contest. The keycap makes a fun optical illusion to represent escaping, but if you’re looking for something a little more literal, these transparent keycaps designed to seem like little terrariums will actually provide you with the escape you need to find greener fields!
