As per reports, Google is edging closer to a new extension platform. Next year, the Manifest V3 for the Chrome extension platform, which is fresh, will be released. Google will start deactivating Manifest V2 support in the Canary, Dev, and Beta channels in January 2023. The search engine giant will begin testing the removal of channel support in Chrome 115, which will be released in June. All Manifest V2 extensions now available in the Chrome Web Store will be "unlisted" with the switch to V3, and all V2 extensions still in use will be removed by January 2024. Google new extension platform According to Google, the new chrome extension is one of the most significant changes to the extensions platform since its introduction ten years ago. What's at Issue There is debate surrounding this change. Although Manifest V3 will bring about many improvements, privacy and security will be the main focus of most of them.  Since it would probably render ad-blockers worthless, many people consider how it will affect them. Today, many ad-blockers rely on Chrome's "webRequest" API to prevent the submission of entire categories of HTTP requests.  The search engine behemoth seeks to avoid this, as the strategy can result in appreciable delays in how quickly pages load and are rendered. Google new extension platform As a result, Manifest V3 contains a solution that mandates the usage of "declarativeNetRequest," which forces developers to utilize a blocklist of predetermined URLs.  Although most ad-blocking lists include more entries than the "rules," which have a cap of 30,000, do so. The new Chrome extension is actually "deceitful and dangerous," according to privacy advocacy group EFF. They believe that Web extensions built to monitor, edit, and compute will have their capabilities limited by Manifest V3. Consequently, some extension developers are already developing solutions inside the Manifest V3 sandbox. Before they are created, and Google discontinues the current extension platform, it is impossible to say how the end user will be affected.
