Soon, the locked screen of your iPhone might contain more than a few tiny widgets. According to Bloomberg insiders, Apple will include a lock screen to iOS 17 that, when placed on its side, effectively transforms an iPhone into a smart display. According to reports, you’ll view calendar entries, alerts, and other information in a high-contrast arrangement similar to that of an Amazon Echo Show or Google Nest Hub. The new lock screen is reported to be equivalent to an Amazon Fire tablet feature and more complex than the one Google added to Android 10 in 2019.
Apple has already opted not to respond. At its Worldwide Developer Conference (WWDC) on June 5th, the company is anticipated to unveil iOS 17, with a September release date for the final product. Although iPadOS has lagged behind iOS in features like lock screen customization, there is no mention of whether the iPad would have similar functionality.
It’s possible that Apple has other plans for smart displays. The tech giant is allegedly working on a number of smart home products, some of which may have a mountable screen. The iOS 17 update is thought to be a part of a bigger initiative to surface live information, which also includes a significant watchOS overhaul with a widget-focused approach.

App sideloading in at least some nations is one of the big improvements that iOS 17 is rumored to bring. Additionally, SharePlay video cooperation may get better, and AirPlaying to hotel TVs and other non-personal devices may get simpler. The Health and Wallet apps could be joined by an updated version of a life journaling app.
