iPhone 14 Pro's Always-On Display Battery Drain Test

Many users have wondered how much of an impact an always-on display has had on battery life since its introduction in the iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max. A new video examines how much battery drain the always-on display causes and whether turning off the wallpaper lessens that drain. Users could not customize various aspects of the always-on display at launch, but with the iOS 16.2 update launched last month, Apple has given users the option to enable or disable the wallpaper and alerts while the Lock Screen is dimmed. When you disable the wallpaper, the always-on display is black except for the clock, date, any widgets you've set up on your iOS lock screen, and, if enabled, recent notifications. PhoneBuff, a YouTuber, investigated whether enabling or disabling the wallpaper affects overall iPhone battery life. PhoneBuff discovered that an iPhone 14 Pro with the wallpaper activated for the always-on display drains around 0.8% per hour. Whenever the wallpaper is turned off, this drops to 0.6% per hour. The video also shows that the clock on the Galaxy S22 Ultra's screen moves over time, probably to prevent OLED burn-in. On the iPhone, however, time and all other details remain constant. During the test, the iPhone 14 Pro and Galaxy S22 Ultra drained at a similar rate, reaching 84% after 24 hours of always-on display use.
