The dream of
Jennifer Coolidge to join the cast of
Saturday Night Live sort of simply materialized. The White Lotus star was skillfully portrayed by Chloe Fineman in a sketch that aired on Saturday's Christmas show. The day after, Coolidge, 61, praised Fineman's portrayal and referred to it as "exceptionally brilliant."
She tweeted, "Wow! A massive thanks to @NBCSNL!!"
Then Coolidge confessed that earlier in her career, she had tried to join the cast. She said, "Also, congrats to the new cast members!! I know how hard it is to get on that show," adding, "I tried my ass off to be one but you actually made it!! What a feat! Happy holidays to you all!!"
And although she didn't make it on SNL, Coolidge still had a good and lengthy acting career. She recently won her first Emmy for her work on The White Lotus, for which she was also nominated for a Golden Globe. Additionally, she has an extensive movie career, having appeared in films like American Pie and Promising Young Woman, among others.
However, Cecily Strong, a longtime performer on the program, said goodbye as Coolidge posted her tweet about her desire to appear on SNL. She debuted on the program in 2012, and SNL announced her exit on Saturday. SNL posted on Instagram, "Tonight we send off one of the best to ever do it. We'll miss you, Cecily!"

Additional details
According to SNL founder Lorne Michaels, the NBC program is in a "transition year." Between May and September, seven cast members left the show, creating numerous possibilities for a new generation of comedians to take over.
In addition, Cecily Strong is the first midseason departure from the series, although she is only the most recent in this wave of transition. Moreover, the wholesale exodus from SNL started in May when Pete Davidson, Kyle Mooney, Aidy Bryant, and Kate McKinnon left. They all said their final goodbyes during the 47th season finale.
Furthermore, PEOPLE revealed on September 1 that Melissa Villaseñor, Alex Moffat, and featured player Aristotle Athari will not be returning for season 48 of Saturday Night Live. Additionally, Talent Chief Lindsay Shookus left SNL in August after announcing her departure from the program.
Lastly, new episodes of
Saturday Night Live will air in 2023.
