Jennifer Siebel Newsom charged with perjury about Harvey Weinstein rape

According to Harvey Weinstein's attorneys, Jennifer Siebel Newsom lied about being raped by him because she can't "square away" the fact that they had "transactional" sex. Jane Doe 4, the wife of California Governor Gavin Newsom, who has been referred to throughout the sexual assault trial involving Harvey Weinstein, allegedly put on a "overly dramatic" performance on the witness stand to mask her shame over having consensual sex with Weinstein, according to the defense's Alan Jackson. Jackson claimed in his closing argument at the Los Angeles Superior Court that Siebel Newsom had lied about her 2005 sexual encounter with Weinstein at a Beverly Hills hotel despite her education and "refinement" in order to "cope" with a choice she's not proud of. “She may regret the transactional sex but regret is far from rape,” Jackson told jurors. “She made a decision to have a relationship with Harvey and she benefited from it. … That’s the definition of transactional sex and she hates it.” Siebel Newsom testified two weeks ago Weinstein lured her to his hotel room under the guise they would be discussing a movie role. She said she agreed because at the time, Weinstein could “make or ruin your career.” [caption id="attachment_68236" align="aligncenter" width="744"]Jennifer Siebel Newsom Image/AP[/caption] She described how Weinstein, 70, penetrated her vagina with his fingers, then his “deformed” penis, which she described as “kind of fish-like.” When Deputy District Attorney Marlene Martinez asked Siebel Newsom if she intended to have sex with the producer that night in 2005, she sobbed and screamed "no" several times. Siebel was one of four women who testified Weinstein had sexually assaulted them during the trial. She claimed to have "put in a box" the horrifying memories of the rape, but on occasion, it would come out in rage. Siebel Newsom retorted in response to Mark Werksman, the defense attorney, asking repeatedly about specifics of her prior testimony: "What you're doing today is exactly what he did to me." Jackson criticized California's First Lady on Thursday for disregarding his co-counsel's line of questioning. “How dare you say something like that,” Jackson said. “She dares to equate that to violent rape. There are women out there who have been violently raped. She contrived this entire performance to paint herself a victim for choices she’s made.” Jackson claimed that Siebel Newsom performed a "performance of a lifetime" when testifying in court and repeatedly lied to the jury, in contrast to Martinez, who praised the former actress for having the fortitude to come forward to testify in the trial. Jackson emphasized how Siebel Newsom continued to email Weinstein for meetings and inquired about potential movie opportunities while allegedly being severely raped by him. The #MeToo movement, which has brought down Weinstein and other prominent men accused of sexual misconduct, is referenced in his assertion that Siebel Newsom only came out against Weinstein when it "became trendy" and to "join a movement." Jackson claimed that Siebel Newsom performed a "performance of a lifetime" when testifying in court and repeatedly lied to the jury, in contrast to Martinez, who praised the former actress for having the fortitude to come forward to testify in the trial. A collage of more than a dozen emails was also presented by the defense, one of which contained a request for Weinstein's counsel on how to handle negative press pertaining to a scandal involving her ex-boyfriend Gavin Newsom, who had an earlier relationship with an aide. There were a lot of emails asking for support for her husband's candidacy as well. “She sought his company over and over,” Jackson said. “She changes details when it looks bad for her or says she doesn’t remember. Everything (regarding her memory) is still ‘in a box.’ I don’t know where that box is but maybe she will find the truth there!”
Weinstein has entered a not guilty plea to 11 counts of rape and sexual assault against four women. If found guilty, he could spend up to 140 years in jail. He has already completed serving a 23-year term in New York for sexual misconduct. On Thursday, the defense decided to end their case. On Friday, the prosecution will present its argument to the jury.
