A man wanted for reportedly depositing a dead fish at the location used for The Goonies movie was saved after the stolen boat that he was riding on collapsed. According to the Astoria Police Department, Jericho Labonte, 35, was apprehended on Friday after a series of incidents that started with him allegedly recording himself leaving a fish at a residence in Astoria, Oregon, and ended with him being rescued by the Coast Guard as the boat capsized in the Columbia River. Furthermore, officials said that Labonte was previously wanted on allegations of stealing, harming another person, using a vehicle without authorization, and malicious mischief.

Details about the case

On Wednesday, Astoria police received complaints that a dead fish had been placed on the porch of the house that served as the setting for the 1985 classic film, directed by Richard Donner and written by Chris Columbus based on a tale by Steven Spielberg. He then left the area after a short while. The man was later recognized by police as Labonte, and a hunt was launched for him. Two days later, a P/C Sandpiper boat on the Columbia River sent out a mayday signal, which came in the midst of a training expedition, to the Coast Guard. The boat capsized, and a video from the event showed Labonte, who was on board, being flung into the ocean. According to one tweet, "The surf made rescue by boat dangerous, so the aircrew decided to lower the rescue swimmer and have the owner enter the water for rescue. As he entered the water the vessel capsized but the rescue swimmer was able to safely recover the individual. He was flown back to Coast Guard Base Astoria where EMS was waiting to evaluate and treat the man." He recognized the vessel on the video, contacted the owner, and confirmed that it had been stolen." Additionally, the report stated that at the same time, they "received calls from several citizens identifying the rescued victim" as Jericho Labonte.
