A new investigation into Kathleen Folbigg's conviction for the deaths of her four children has reportedly been launched to examine the conflicting scientific evidence that a genetic variant caused their deaths. The investigation will also examine whether her diaries, which were a key factor in her initial conviction, were a confession of guilt or the musings of a "grieving mother," as opposed to a journal kept as part of the investigation. Folbigg, 55, who is known as "Australia's worst female serial killer," was found guilty in 2003 of killing her three subsequent children, Patrick, Sarah, and Laura, as well as killing her firstborn Caleb. Between 1989 and 1999, the infants, who ranged in age from 19 days to 18 months, perished in mysterious circumstances. Folbigg, who has previously served approximately 18 years in prison, is presently incarcerated for 30 years with a 25-year period before becoming eligible for release. She argues that there was no wrongdoing and that her children passed away naturally. According to News.Au, despite numerous appeals, the mother's guilt was confirmed by a public investigation in 2018 and she has been unable to clear her name. NSW Governor Margaret Beazley commissioned a new investigation into the contentious issue in May 2022 as a result of a petition signed by 90 illustrious scientists, science supporters, and medical professionals. This followed the discovery of new scientific evidence suggesting Sarah and Laura Folbigg carried a hereditary abnormality that could result in heart issues and untimely death. Why inquiry is re-examining Folbigg's personal diaries?

On Monday, February 13, the second investigation investigating Folbigg's convictions was reopened, and Sophie Callan SC, the counsel assisting the investigation, announced that the diaries would also be examined. The diary, which allegedly discussed Folbigg's difficulties as a mother, was characterized by the prosecution as her "admission to guilt" during the early trials. Folbigg mentioned Laura in one entry two years before she passed away at the age of 19 months. "Thank god she's a pretty amiable baby; it'll keep her from sharing her siblings' destiny. The mother apparently made the entry in late 1997 and stated, "I think she was warned.
