According to stories in the media on Tuesday, passengers on a United Airlines flight were startled to see a surprise traveler slithering around in business class.
A representative for the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey confirmed to Insider that a snake was discovered on Monday upon the plane's arrival at Newark Liberty International Airport from Florida.
When they saw the snake aboard the plane, passengers in business class screamed and raised their feet, a passenger on the flight told

According to the port authorities, the snake was determined to be a garter snake. According to the
Florida Museum of Natural History, garter snakes, sometimes known as grass snakes, are normally up to 66 cm long, non-venomous, and not harmful to people. Thankfully, they aren't like the snakes in Samuel L. Jackson's 2006 film "Snakes on a Plane."
According to the port authority spokesperson, once the plane arrived at the gate, personnel caught the snake and returned it into the wild.
The representative claimed that no one was hurt and that there was no interference with airport operations. According to United, passengers informed cabin crew of the snake, and Newark airport authorities assisted in handling the incident.
According to accounts, neither the port officials nor United disclosed how the snake got on the plane. Insider contacted the airline after business hours, but they did not answer right away. A snake has previously frightened passengers on an airplane. In February, a snake was found in an overhead light bulb aboard an AirAsia flight, leading to a detour.
An attendant on a SunExpress aircraft earlier this year discovered a snake's head in her onboard dinner, which was probably even more unsettling.
