Lufthansa Airlines Is Not Banning AirTags

The German airline Lufthansa claimed last weekend that it is now forbidding AirTags in checked bags from its flights, which sparked some debate among its passengers. Though the trackers were described as "hazardous items" in posts from Lufthansa's official Twitter account, the airline has now clarified that it is not forbidding Apple's AirTag. Some passengers questioned Lufthansa about the rumours that AirTags will be prohibited from using the airline's flights on Twitter. In response, Lufthansa said on its official Twitter account that it is "banning activated AirTags from bags as they are classed as harmful." Owners of AirTag (and likely other trackers) are required to switch them off before checking their bags, according to Lufthansa. The business then defended its choice by citing International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) regulations that require objects having a transmission function to be turned off during flight. According to a spokesperson for Lufthansa, AirTags are still permitted on the airline's flights. Although there is a "existing ICAO regulation on such devices, this has nothing to do with Lufthansa or any other carrier," the business points out. What prompted the airline to openly announce that it will prohibit AirTags from its flights is currently unknown. Lufthansa Airlines Is Not Banning AirTags Although the ICAO does have a specific guideline for electronics in checked baggage, this only applies to items with lithium ion batteries, including smartphones and tablets. Apple's AirTag makes use of a CR2032 battery, which is compact and not seen as endangering flight safety. These batteries are the same ones used in conventional timepieces, after all. The International Air Transport Association (IATA), as stated in the report, establishes the regulations on what can be transported aboard an aeroplane. Airlines are permitted to make modest adjustments to their own rules, but it would appear that Lufthansa lacks the authority to outright forbid AirTags, especially given that other airlines don't appear to care. There is a rationale behind why Lufthansa might have thought of prohibiting Apple's AirTag from its flights. People have reported finding their luggage after it had been reported lost by airlines, as we have previously chronicled. Apple's item tracker may be positioned just about everywhere. It is an excellent alternative for tracking items like backpacks and suitcases because it can communicate with nearby Apple devices and does not require an internet connection.
