Mercedes, the world's most renowned German automobile manufacturer, has recently made international headlines due to the company's quiet introduction of a new forthcoming subscription service that will bill Mercedes owners US$1200 (excluding taxes) annually to make their vehicles accelerate faster.
The subscription, dubbed "Acceleration Increase" on the company's official North American market website, will be available soon for the Mercedes-EQ lineup of electric vehicles. Mercedes claims that subscribers will notice a significant improvement in acceleration in their current Mercedes vehicles with an Acceleration Increase.
The motor power output (kW) of Mercedes-EQ owners' vehicles can be increased by up to 24% by fine-tuning the electric motors. Furthermore, with the subscription, the torque is increased, allowing your vehicle to accelerate way faster and more powerfully. According to Mercedes' marketing materials, Acceleration Increase also means allowing for the modification of the motor's characteristic curve, torque, and maximum output.

Owners of Mercedes-EQ electric vehicles will be locked behind a US$1200 annual paywall, denying them access to critical features like faster acceleration and much more powerful motors. These features are already available on the cars' built-in electric motors, but they are locked behind a paywall that requires payment to unlock. Non-paying buyers and owners will get a poorer driving experience than owners who pay every year.
BMW caused outrage in some countries by charging owners an US$18 monthly subscription to use the heated seats already equipped in the brand's vehicles. BMW previously attempted (and failed) to bill its owners US$80 per month for access to Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.
