Microsoft invests billions in a new partnership with the company behind ChatGPT

Microsoft announced a new multibillion-dollar investment in a third round of collaboration with ChatGPT maker OpenAI. The company first announced a partnership with OpenAI in 2019 and followed up with a second round two years later as it tried to expand its AI products. The company will use the OpenAI partnership to develop supercomputing systems that will help advance independent research and development for AI, which, according to a press release, is becoming “safe, useful, and powerful.” OpenAI is considered one of the top three AI labs in the world and is the creator of ChatGPT, which produces text as entire articles or essays by using prompts and keywords that have attracted widespread attention in recent months. The company has also developed AI software for video games, which allows humans to beat a digitized opponent in the games. In a separate press release, Microsoft’s Chairman and CEO Satya Nadella said that “we established our partnership with OpenAI with the common goal of responsibly advancing cutting-edge AI research and democratizing AI as a new technology platform.” "With this next phase of our partnership, developers and organizations across industries will have access to Azure’s best AI infrastructure, models, and toolchains to build and run their applications," Nadella said in a statement.
