More Gay & Bisexual Men Can Donate Blood: FDA

According to reports, the FDA is considering lifting an absolute prohibition on gay and bisexual men donating blood. The change would enable currently monogamous men who have sex with men to donate on a regular basis. Many medical experts and LGBT activists have criticised the practise, particularly as medical technology advances. Current tests to detect HIV in donated blood more correctly and from people who have only recently been infected. The FDA is expected to remove time-sensitive restrictions on gay and bisexual men donating blood. Instead, potential donors will be screened based on their recent sexual history. People that haven't had a new sex partner in last three months should be fine to donate. Gay & Bisexual Men Can Donate Blood Anal sex and sex with multiple partners, particularly when unprotected, are known to increase the risk of transmitting and contracting sexually transmitted diseases such as HIV. According to an FDA official cited by the WSJ, the three-month waiting period is assumed to be long enough for people to find out if they have HIV from a recent exposure. The FDA's proposed changes appear to be supported by a recent FDA-funded study that evaluated the new approach and included approximately 1,600 gay and bisexual men. "It's long past time that we safeguard the blood supply based on what people do rather than who people are," Kinsley said.
