The mother of eight who was detained after her teenage twins ran away from their Texas home and reported being abused, hungry, and handcuffed is now the focus of a multi-state child abuse investigation. According to police charging documents acquired by The Post, Zaikiya Duncan, 40, is currently charged with aggravated assault and assault on a family member with a prior conviction in Harris County, Texas, while her partner Jova Terrell, 27, is charged with ongoing violence against the family. Her 15-year-old twins were seen on film on October 18 pleading for assistance at a neighbor's door, who took them in and then contacted the police. This prompted police to launch an investigation. She and Terrell fled after police began looking for Duncan, which led to the activation of an Amber Alert for Duncan's five children, who are aged 14, 12, 10, 7, and 12. Duncan and Terrell were later apprehended by authorities in Louisiana, where they are currently being jailed without bond pending extradition to Texas. The Lone Star State will hold them formally responsible once they have been taken there. The five minors who were the focus of the Amber Alert are being cared for by child protective services in Louisiana. In addition, Duncan is the mother of a 17-year-old son who was detained along with Terrell. According to Texas authorities who spoke with The Post, since his mother was arrested in Louisiana, he is now legally an adult and was given permission to leave with her car. The house in Cypress, Texas [outside of Houston], from which the twins escaped, had recently been relocated into by Duncan, her boyfriend, and her other kids. According to KPRC, neighbors claim that the family had only been residing in the house for two weeks. A real estate website lists the house as being valued $600,000 and describes it as being brand new. The house has a grand staircase and four bedrooms. Duncan has never had a job in the past, according to the records. On October 29, 2019, she was found guilty of cruelty to a child, according to court records. The accusations are related to a Louisiana event where a youngster was left behind. As Louisiana child protective custody officials are not permitted to publicly comment on cases, it is unclear if the child in question was taken from her custody, which other children were involved in the case, or when the child was restored to her. A troubling occurrence also happened ten years earlier, when Duncan's then-5-year-old child was transported from her school to a nearby hospital for burns to his feet, genitalia, and other body parts, according to court documents obtained by KHOU.
