We have heard Netflix, Disney Plus, and Amazon Prime releasing original movies. In addition, many streaming channels have their own original series and films. But this is the first time a messaging app is stepping into the film business. Earlier this week, Meta-owned WhatsApp announced its first original short film - Naija Odyssey.
Details on WhatsApp's short film
Naija Odyssey tells the story of NBA player Giannis Antetokounmpo. Born in Athens, Greece, to a Nigerian couple, Antetokounmpo was named NBA All-Star Game MVP for the Milwaukee Bucks last year.
The film is short, spanning only 12 minutes. In addition, it signifies WhatsApp's entering the entertainment business, which is a pretty unusual venture for a messaging app.
On another note, Naija Odyssey appears to be a promotional move by WhatsApp. And that is somewhat deducible in light of Antetokounmpo recently signing an endorsement deal with the app, which is another first for WhatsApp.
Vivian Odior, WhatsApp's global head of marketing, stated to Variety, "'Naija Odyssey' is a story that reinforces how WhatsApp helps us embrace our multifaceted lives. In navigating relationships, identity, and even adversity, WhatsApp is there — enabling you to embrace all sides of you by connecting you to those who matter most."
And although the company likely made the short film to remind people that WhatsApp helps people connect with loved ones, they are possibly banking on gaining profit from Antetokounmpo's fame.
Lastly, Naija Odyssey will premiere on WhatsApp's social media accounts, including YouTube and Amazon Prime Video, on September 21, 2022, reported Variety. However, the trailer is already out on WhatsApp's YouTube channel.
