According to reports, Netflix will launch an internal game studio in Helsinki, Finland, as part of the ongoing development of its video gaming sector.
The streaming service declared on Monday that there would be no in-app purchases and no advertisements in the games it will provide through this new outlet. The studio, also recognized as a mobile developer for creating games like FarmVille, Words with Friends, CSR Racing, and more, will be led by former Zynga executive Marko Lastikka.
Amir Rahimi, Netflix's vice president of game studios, said, "This is another step in our aim to develop a world-class games studio that will provide a variety of fascinating and profoundly engaging original games... to our hundreds of hundreds of millions of subscribers."
This will not be Netflix's first acquisition of the year, as the business also acquired Next Games, a Finnish firm, for $72 million. These are the creators of the smartphone game Stranger Things: Puzzle Tales from last year. Along with purchasing Night School Studio in California last year, Netflix acquired Texas-based Boss Fight Studio early this year.
There are now 20 mobile games that Netflix users can download. By the end of this year, the company wants to hire 50 more people. The Netflix original series-based games Queen's Gambit Chess and Stranger Things: 1984 are both included in the cache. In addition, a new game called "Nailed It! Baking Bash" will be released.
