New addition at Universal Studios Hollywood will not be able to accommodate all Mario fans

Some amusement park guests have always had to overcome height limits, as safety measures on thrill rides aren’t designed to accommodate every rider. But Mario fans who lined up for Universal Studios Hollywood’s opening of Super Nintendo World may be ineligible this time because of their waistlines. Universal Studios Hollywood has warned that some guests could be denied entrance to Mario Kart: Bowser’s Challenge, a new attraction that allows guests to climb aboard a go-kart and play the popular Nintendo racing game in real life through augmented reality effects and animatronic characters, “if their waistline is 40 inches or more.” Given that the average male waist size in America is now more than 40 inches, this restriction could leave many guests disappointed after standing in what will likely be extremely long lines at the new attraction. The technology they use has also become more complex and dangerous as indoor rides have become more complex and offer riders immersive experiences. Mario With more speed and agility, trackless vehicles now weave more confidently through attractions like Galaxy’s Edge’s Rise of the Resistance than traditional ride vehicles used on classic rides like Pirates of the Caribbean. However, quitting before the ride is completed in Mario Kart: Bowser's Challenge can result in serious injury. It is now even more important to secure smaller children in the same seats as adult riders, which results in more restrictions for larger guests. Jeff Polk, Universal Orlando Resort’s senior vice president of resort operations, told the Wall Street Journal that as a result, many of its parks have test seats situated outside of the rides, which allows guests to test restraints and capacity prior to the actual ride construction and design and avoid being turned away after waiting in line for hours. The Incredible Hulk Coaster at Universal's Islands of Adventure in Florida now has certain seats tailored to larger guests, but as the pandemic-weary population returns to traveling and vacations, theme parks are bursting at the seams with hours-long lines, and there's simply less incentive for parks to offer rides with tickets they might not be able to fill every time the ride is run.
