A deal between the US and Mexico permits some Venezuelan migrants to enter the US. But, the US will deport those who do so illegally back to Mexico. Additionally, the officials hope the agreement will reduce strain at the US-Mexico border, as Venezuelans continue to depart the crisis-hit country in large numbers.

Migrants to fly to the US

Flights will be scheduled to bring 24,000 migrants to the US beginning right away. In addition, in the previous five years, six million individuals departed Venezuela. Furthermore, the flight, one of the greatest migrations in history, stemmed from violence, lack of food, fuel, and medicine, as well as repression by President Nicolás Maduro's government. Consequently, people who are anxious to better their lives are traveling thousands of miles on perilous roads in an effort to get to the US-Mexico border, where they attempt to enter illegally or claim asylum. Venezuela Migration Moreover, the new agreement, effective immediately, allows the 24,000 qualified Venezuelan migrants—a small portion of those who fled—to enter the US by air and remain there for up to two years. According to a statement from the US Department of Homeland Security, they must still be in Venezuela and not traveled to the US-Mexico border. Additionally, they will require a US-based individual or organization to support them financially and attest to their eligibility for the program.

More details about the new US-Mexico agreement

Those who stand to gain greatly from it will feel a great sense of relief. Theoretically, they will be able to fly into the nation where support systems are in place rather than making the taxing and perilous journey to the US border. Venezuela Migration However, one significant policy change is that illegal Venezuelans who cross the southern border now risk deportation to Mexico. Whereas, in the past, authorities typically did not agree to deport Venezuelans. Besides, this is a component of the contentious Trump-era policy, Title 42, which enables the US to promptly expulse unauthorized aliens, eliminating their opportunity to request asylum. According to officials, the policy took effect during the pandemic to aid in halting the spread of Covid-19 in holding facilities. On the other hand, up until recently, the US did not turn away the majority of Venezuelans who entered the nation. Instead, the US gave them a temporary entry permit and the opportunity to request asylum. But now,  thousands of Venezuelans who entered the US illegally may now be deported to Mexico. Venezuela Migration According to the US and Mexican governments, the program will deter people from undertaking the perilous journey through Mexico and South America, which they have been undertaking in record numbers over the past year as Venezuela's economic and political situation gets worse.

What's more

The initiative is based on a comparable Uniting for Ukraine program from the US, which provided refuge to more than 100,000 Ukrainians who left their nation after Russia invaded it earlier this year. Interestingly, the US launched the so-called "humanitarian parole program" just as the US midterm elections in November are approaching. Venezuela Migration Undoubtedly, the Biden administration is expecting that the idea of assisting Venezuelans who are escaping poverty, political unrest, and violence will play well politically, particularly combined with simultaneously ejecting thousands who entered the southern border illegally.
