According to the NSPCC, the statistics are "extremely worrisome but only represent the tip of the iceberg" in terms of what children are exposed to online. Police in England and Wales recorded the most indecent image of a child offences during that time period with 30,925, the highest total ever. 9,888 of these incidents involved a social media or gaming website, including Snapchat 4,293, Facebook 1,361, Instagram 1,363, and WhatsApp 547. To stop more children from being exposed to abuse, the NSPCC, which compiled the data, is urging the Internet Safety Bill to be amended in a variety of ways. Sir Peter Wanless, chief executive of the NSPCC, said: "These new figures are incredibly alarming but reflect just the tip of the iceberg of what children are experiencing online. "We hear from young people who feel powerless and let down as online sexual abuse risks becoming normalized for a generation of children. "By creating a child safety advocate that stands up for children and families the government can ensure the Online Safety Bill systemically prevents abuse."
