Arctic fox's breath: This young arctic fox kept calling to another nearby as the photographer observed it. He gradually became aware that after each call, the fox's moist breath was rapidly freezing in the air. In Spitsbergen, Svalbard, it was late winter, and the icy air was -31 degrees Fahrenheit (–35 degrees Celsius).
Monkey Hugs: The photographer traveled to China's Qinling Mountains to study the Sichuan snub-nosed monkey's behavior. The only habitat for the threatened monkeys is the temperate forests of the Alps, which are already in risk from forest disturbance. Zhang Qiang, a photographer, enjoys observing family interactions.
Life in Black and White: Dozens of plains zebras showed up to drink at Okaukuejo waterhole in Etosha National Park, Namibia. Packed closely together and moving as one, the zebras lowered their heads to get water and, almost immediately.
Hope in a Burned Plantation: Early in 2020, the photographer Jo-Anne McArthur took a plane to Australia to record the tales of the creatures impacted by the terrible bushfires that were raging through the states of New South Wales and Victoria. One of the fortunate ones was this eastern grey kangaroo with her joey, which was captured in the area of Mallacoota, Victoria.
Stay Close. A juvenile orangutan needs a lot of energy to care for. Maxime Aliaga observed this mother in the Hutan Pinus/Janthoi Nature Reserve in Sumatra, Indonesia, for more than an hour while she struggled to contain her restless youngster inside the nest. The Sumatran Orangutan Conservation Program has released around 120 seized gorillas into the reserve since 2011.
