Plex: What Is It?

A digital media player and organizing tool known as Plex Media Server (commonly referred to as Plex) enables you to access the music, photos, and videos stored on one computer from any other computer or mobile device that is compatible. The Plex Media Server software can be installed on Windows, Mac, Linux, or a network-attached storage (NAS) device that is compatible, and the Plex app can be run on any other internet-connected device. To view pictures, listen to music, and watch movies on a computer that runs Plex Media Server, you can use any device that is compatible. When you do, you can allow friends and family to remotely view your movies, music, and pictures on your Plex Media Server computer or remotely access media files stored there.

Is Plex free?

You can download and use Plex for free, but unless you pay a subscription fee, you can't use all of its features. Even though you can still do a lot with the free version of Plex, some features, like live television and mobile sync, require the Plex Pass service. Pass Plex: What It Is and What It Can Do?

Plex Pass is a premium service that can be used with Plex Media Server. It has options for a monthly, yearly, or lifetime subscription. Additionally, subscribers get first dibs on brand-new Plex features compared to non-subscribers. The ability to sync and access media files on a mobile device for offline use, the ability to connect an antenna and tuner to watch live television, and greater user control, including parental controls, are among the most important Plex Pass features. The following are the Plex Pass features that are not available with the free subscription:

High-end music:

enables you to create playlists in a manner that is comparable to Spotify and provides lyrics for songs that you stream on Plex.

Photo quality:

enables you to sort and access the photos you want, and includes auto-tagging for your photos. You can also choose to automatically upload new photos from your mobile devices. [caption id="attachment_84768" align="aligncenter" width="1418"]Plex Plex[/caption]

Extras from movies and television shows:

allows you to view movie trailers before streaming videos, just like you would in a movie theater. You can also watch extras like deleted scenes and featurettes from behind the scenes.

Live TV:

allows you to stream local HD television channels to your devices and requires a tuner and antenna. It also has the ability to skip commercials, similar to TiVo, and a digital video recorder (DVR) feature.

Syncing offline:

allows you to download movies and music to your mobile device so that you can watch them later even if the device isn't connected to the internet. Also Read: Game Pass & Luna Games Are Now Accessible Through Google

Controls for parents:

allows you to install the Plex app on the devices of your children and prevent them from accessing any content you don't want them to.

Perks of Plex:

Additionally, subscribers can take advantage of new features prior to free users and receive discounts from partners. [caption id="attachment_84769" align="alignright" width="800"]Plex Plex[/caption]

Compatible Systems and Devices:

Plex is compatible with all major operating systems, but it can also run on the following devices:
  • Computers running Linux, macOS, or Windows.
  • SHIELD by NVIDIA.
  • Nighthawk X10 routers from Netgear.
  • NAS devices that work.
Any of the following devices can be used to access the music, videos, and pictures that are stored on a Plex server:
  • Chrome, Firefox, Edge, Internet Explorer, and Safari are all major web browsers.
  • The majority of smartphones, including Windows Phone, Android, and iOS.
  • Windows, Android, and iOS tablets.
  • TVs with smart features from the majority of manufacturers, such as LG, Samsung, Sony, and Toshiba.
  • The vast majority of television streaming devices, including TiVo, Android TV, Apple TV, Chromecast, Roku, and Sonos.
  • Consoles for video games like the Xbox One

How do I set up my computer to run Plex Media Server?

The Plex Media Server must be installed on the computer or network-attached server (NAS) device where you store your media files in order to use Plex. Install the Plex app on all of your other devices, including televisions, streaming devices, game consoles, smartphones, and tablets. After that, launch the app and use it to stream your Plex Media Server media files. Install the server software and sign up for an account with the service before you can stream your music and videos with Plex.
