For its upcoming release, Niantic is collaborating with a different kind of monster. The company, best known for Pokémon Go, has revealed a collaboration with Capcom to create a game based on the Monster Hunter series. The new game, Monster Hunter Now, intends to take the series' central tenet — hunting monsters — and turn it into the sort of immersive augmented reality experience for which Niantic is renowned. There were little details about the gameplay (Niantic promises more information will be accessible when the closed beta debuts in the near future), but it seems Monster Hunter Now will stick to a tried-and-true pattern. Players will be able to find monsters and different materials on a real-world map under the idea that the Monster Hunter universe has somehow filtered into our world. Players can obtain various materials by hunting monsters, and these resources can then be used to make better weapons and armor, which can then be used to hunt even more difficult monsters. Combat has always played a significant role in MonHun, with drawn-out, occasionally draining battles. Similar to the main console game, you can hunt with friends in Now. Battles will only last a maximum of 75 seconds in the mobile game, which also significantly compresses the action. Sakae Osumi, senior producer of Niantic's Tokyo studio, stated during a press conference that "we wanted to make the combat element simple and intuitive, but still hard to master." Another distinctive aspect of the game is the ability for players to tag monsters with paintballs while they are in motion so that they can be fought at home or in another location. Yes, the game will feature the adorably cute Palico companion creatures. According to Niantic CEO John Hanke, "We've worked closely with Capcom to create an experience that honours the incredible legacy of Monster Hunter." Producer of the Monster Hunter series Ryozo Tsujimoto referred to the process as "close collaboration" between the two businesses. This contains abandoned projects like Harry Potter: Wizards Unite and Pikmin Bloom as well as games like NBA All-World and Pikmin Bloom. However, none have achieved the same level of success as Pokémon, and in June Niantic cancelled a number of ongoing initiatives and let go of 8% of its workforce. Peridot, the developer's own original virtual pet game, is currently under development and scheduled to debut in May. While this is happening, Monster Hunter is still very popular. Monster Hunter: World, released in 2018, became Capcom's best-selling game of all time, and a live-action film based on the game debuted in 2020. According to Niantic, the iOS and Android versions of Monster Hunter Now will be released in September.
