The 2023 24 Hours of Daytona, which serves as the inaugural round of the 2023 IMSA SportsCar Championship, is just a few months away for Porsche's 963 and the rest of the new LMDh field. Porsche has been testing the 963 in advance of the new season and that opening race; the most recent test took place earlier in September at Daytona International Speedway. A total of 397 laps were finished, covering more than 1,400 miles. The weather was extremely difficult because man and machine had to contend with humidity levels of over 90%, frequent downpours, and daytime temperatures of about 95 degrees (and significantly hotter at the track surface). Factory drivers Dane Cameron, Matt Campbell, and Mathieu Jaminet alternated shifts in the driver's seat. Porsche 963 The Porsche 963 is the first of a new series of elite endurance racers constructed to LMDh specifications, and it was unveiled in June during the 2022 Goodwood Festival of Speed. The vehicles will compete against other vehicles constructed in accordance with current LMH regulations on an equitable playing field using Balance of Performance guidelines.

LMDh and LMH cars are both eligible for the SportsCar Championship's new GTP class, which will take the place of the existing DPi premier class in 2023. Both car types are also eligible for the FIA World Endurance Championship's elite Hypercar class, whose signature race is the 24 Hours of Le Mans. While ByKolles, Ferrari, Glickenhaus, Peugeot, and Toyota are all committed to LMH, Acura, Alpine, BMW, and Cadillac are also devoted to LMDh. Additionally, Lamborghini declared in May that it would merge with LMDh in 2024. Audi had also planned to join LMDh in 2023, but the company revealed in August that it had shelved the project in order to concentrate resources on a 2026 Formula 1 entry. Porsche 963 According to LMDh standards, the hybrid powertrain in the Porsche 963 is capable of producing a maximum output of approximately 670 hp at any one time. It has been verified that the internal combustion engine is a twin-turbo, 4.6-liter V-8 similar to the one used in the 918 Spyder hypercar. The electric portion of the powertrain has not yet been described by Porsche. Under the name Porsche Penske Motorsport, Porsche will run its LMDh campaign alongside Team Penske from the United States. The team is located out of Penske's corporate offices in Mooresville, North Carolina, which also serves as the location for managing the company's NASCAR and IndyCar campaigns. The team has also confirmed Kevin Estre, Michael Christensen, Andre Lotterer, Laurens Vanthoor, and Felipe Nasr in addition to the drivers already named.
