The Barcelona-born music festival Primavera Sound finally made it to Hollywood after a year of pandemic-related delays. Last weekend, Primavera constructed three formidable stages at the Los Angeles State Historic Park for the first time, tucked adjacent to Chinatown, with three days of programming and a diversified roster headlined by Lorde, Nine Inch Nails, and Arctic Monkeys.
Furthermore, the Primavera Sound campus first felt overcrowded with will-call ticket holders waiting in a nearly half-mile line, but it never felt oppressive. Additionally, most of the 45-minute set pieces had perfect pacing and offered something for everyone (a must for the eclectic taste of the area).
Details on the Three-Day Event
On the opening night, Lorde asked the audience, "Shall we dance for our 15-year-old selves right now?" The New Zealand singer-songwriter was sporting a black bikini top and sheer leggings with Stevie Nicks-inspired details. She cycled through her classic hits like "Royals," "Homemade Dynamite," and "The Louvre" while performing on the mainstage with a single set piece. In addition, the main stage looked like a wrecking ball made of wooden blocks and decorated with a ladder. Moreover, Lorde was astounded by her audience's participation level, saying, "I didn't know you would cheer, L.A. You guys are the cool kids."
Before Lorde's performance, Stereolab played a modest set on the smaller Tecate Alta stage. After that, Mitski's intense and acclaimed block followed. Visitors enjoyed activations like Create Hospitality's Hangar 1 Vodka pop-up lounge.
Moreover, after wristband holders learned the lay of the land on Saturday, crowds began to flow in (and law enforcement presence increased). Additionally, after her shoutout on Beyonce and Madonna's Queens Mix of "Break My Soul," Tierra Whack performed a highly entertaining show on the mainstage at 5 p.m. Her hype man warmed up the crowd by playing everything from Vanessa Carlton's "A Thousand Miles" to A$AP Ferg's "Plain Jane."
On Sunday, King Krule's stunning (if not brief) set served as the weekend's capstone. In addition, referring to Primavera's global heritage, Revelers—who included more children than expected—passed a light installation spelling out "Made in Barcelona." They spaced the letters apart like the Hollywood sign, which proudly stood nine miles in the hills west of the park.
