Qualcomm to introduce world’s first commercially deployable iSIM

Image credit : adobe.com Qualcomm revealed this week that it will be adding the “world’s first commercially deployable iSIM” (Integrated SIM) to its Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 Mobile Platform. In simpler terms, users of this chipset will be able to ditch swappable SIM cards for a hardware SIM card instead.  Thanks to Qualcomm and Thales Group, a French electronics company, this new hardware will be integrated into the processor of the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 instead of existing on its own on the motherboard. Although this move might seem redundant, there are several advantages. For example, “it saves space by eliminating the need for a separate component” allowing phone manufacturers the opportunity “to create smaller, more compact devices”. The result is a structurally sound phone that's more resistant to damage from dust and water while also being “easier to carry”.  The other added benefit is increased security. Since the iSIM is placed directly into the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2, some will have a more difficult time trying to gain unauthorized access to a device. The technology also reportedly allows “over-the-air provisioning, making it easier for carriers to manage their customers’ devices.” However, that’s the end of the good news. Frequent travelers might not be happy about the new update. There’s a chance of iSIM phones not working in other countries. People traveling overseas usually purchase prepaid SIM cards so they don’t have to spend their money on roaming charges. It is obvious that eSIM phones will not allow you to do the same since the chip is directly connected to the hardware. This may also apply to iSIM devices.  Although it has been mentioned that the technology can be connected to multiple carriers, this feature, as Thales called it, is “useful for customers who frequently travel internationally.” It boasts that users will be able to “switch carriers as needed without purchasing a new SIM card”. However, that is dependent on other countries supporting iSIM.  It is yet unknown when and where the first version of iSIM will roll out but Qualcomm state that it predicts “global iSIM shipments” to hit 300 million by 2027.
