The construction of the Gigafactories for 3D-printed solid-state battery cells will be supervised by Porsche Consulting, which has extensive experience constructing environmentally friendly automotive facilities. With the aid of the breakthrough, Swift Print technology from Sakuu, the solid electrolyte can be precisely layered between the anode and the cathode. Sakuu (formerly KeraCel), one of the more creative businesses in the 3D printing industry, has signed up a Porsche subsidiary to build its future Gigafactories for lithium-metal and solid-state electric vehicle batteries. Porsche Consulting has experience designing auto manufacturing facilities, but it has recently shifted its attention to battery Gigafactories that can produce cells with GWh capacity ranges. According to Porsche, the initiative "focuses on contemporary battery technology, effective production processes, and the appropriate sites and scalability for sustainable production." The company intends to begin with a factory design for producing its more energy-dense lithium-metal batteries in a more conventional roll-to-roll fashion before expanding to a mass manufacturing process for 3D-printing solid-state batteries using its ground-breaking Swift Print technique. The Kavian platform, which was created in-house, employs "advanced multi-material additive manufacturing" to get around the biggest obstacle standing in the way of commercial solid-state battery production: precisely layering the electrode and electrolyte sheets at the nanoscale with carefully managed interference. The John A. Paulson School of Engineering and Applied Science at Harvard developed the solid-state electrolyte concept, and the MIT Binder-Jet Application Group developed the Kavian 3D-printing platform. Researchers Develop a Stable, Long-Lasting Solid-State Lithium Battery for EVs - News Photo Credit: EE Power Sakuu hopes to achieve an energy density that is roughly 800 Wh/l, which is double that of current EV batteries, in the same footprint thanks to its safer and more durable solid-state cell designs. Using Sakuu's Swift Print technology, they will eventually achieve "dramatic savings in material utilization, production, supply chain, and labor" while also enabling ultrafast charging.
