The renowned Colombian singer, Shakira, will go on trial in Spain for alleged tax fraud totaling €14.5 million (£12.9 million). Although a date has not yet been determined, a Barcelona court has mandated that the singer face trial for six suspected tax offenses. Furthermore, if the diva is found guilty, Spanish prosecutors seek to sentence her to eight years in prison and a €23.8 million fine. On the other hand, the 45-year-old singer has categorically refuted all accusations of wrongdoing. Shakira   BBC reported that she recently stated in an interview with the Spanish edition of Elle magazine, "I am confident that I have enough proof to support my case and that justice will prevail in my favor." Moreover, in a statement, Shakira's legal team promised to carry out their duties "by presenting [the] arguments at the appropriate time." What's more Previously, Shakira turned down a plea bargain from the prosecution and chose to go to trial instead. Additionally, her residency status between 2012 and 2014, when prosecutors claimed she was allegedly living in Spain but giving another address as her official residence, is at the center of this dispute. The reason is that the Spanish law regards people who stay in Spain for more than six months as residents for taxation purposes. But, Shakira claims that she was not residing primarily in Spain then. Shakira   Meanwhile, prosecutors allegedly said in a document released in July that she and her ex-partner, Barcelona footballer Gerard Piqué, purchased a home in Barcelona in 2012 that they used as a family residence. However, according to her attorneys, she spent a significant amount of time traveling outside of Spain up until 2014 and earned most of her money from international tours. "The Spanish tax authorities saw that I was dating a Spanish citizen and started to drool. They wanted to go after that money no matter what", she told Elle magazine, as per a BBC report. Shakira   In 2015, Shakira declared Spain her home country for tax purposes. She claimed she has paid $17.2 million in taxes and doesn't owe anyone anything. On another note, the Spanish national court penalized Mr. Piqué €2.1 million in a separate case in 2019 for tax fraud between 2008 and 2010. The couple declared their separation after 12 years together early in June this year. They have two sons, ages seven and nine, together. In an interview with Elle, Shakira spoke about her separation publicly for the first time, admitting that she is currently going through "probably one of the most difficult, darkest hours of my life."
