Sony stated in its most recent earnings report that the number of PlayStation Plus subscribers dropped from 47.3 million to 45.4 million this quarter.  Despite Sony unveiling a revised subscription catalog between May and June of this year, including new tiers that allow inclusive access to hundreds of titles for download and streaming, it's the subscription service's third consecutive quarterly loss According to VGC, Sony has now sold 25 million PlayStation 5 consoles overall as of this quarter. Between July and September 30, it sold 3.3 million PS5 consoles, which is the same amount as it did during the same period last year.  In comparison to the same quarter last year, it sold 62.5 million fewer physical copies of games, a decline of about 20%. In order to get the PlayStation 5 into people's hands after its newest console launched in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, the firm has encountered high-profile supply chain issues. Sony's new PlayStation Plus memberships had a shaky beginning  The console became a symbol of worldwide chip scarcity and was extremely challenging for many individuals to get for months. The company's games business saw an increase in revenue from 645.4 to 720.7 billion yen (about $4.4 to $4.9 billion) year over year, with the impact of the weak yen contributing to some of the growth.  However, operational income decreased by about 50%, from 82.7 billion yen to 42.1 billion yen (around $560 million to $285 million). The expenditures associated with making acquisitions like Bungie and game development in general, according to Sony, are part of the reason for this downturn. According to Toyo Securities analyst Hideki Yasuda, "Performance of Sony's two primary pillars, games and image sensors, was terrible and covered by the weak yen." "PlayStation software sales remained dismal, and PlayStation Plus subscriber numbers are worryingly falling." According to Bloomberg, Sony has reduced its projected annual profit for its games segment from 255 billion yen to 225 billion yen (about $1.7 billion to $1.5 billion).  The business has stated that although it is concentrating on increasing PS5 console manufacturing, it also intends to distribute more games on PC and mobile to increase its appeal.
