A U.S. aircraft carrier is visiting South Korea for joint military drills in response to the North's increasing nuclear threat, and on Sunday, North Korea launched a short-range ballistic missile toward its eastern seas. This continued the country's provocative pattern of weapons testing. The missile, which was launched from the western inland town of Taechon, traveled 600 kilometers (370 miles) across the country and reached a maximum altitude of 60 kilometers (37 miles) before coming to rest in the waters off North Korea's eastern coast, according to the Joint Chiefs of Staff of South Korea. According to South Korea's presidential office, National Security Director Kim Sung-han convened an urgent meeting of the National Security Council, where members denounced the launch as a blatant disregard for resolutions of the U.N. Security Council and charged the North with inflaming tensions in the area. The launch, according to the U.S. Indo-Pacific Command, did not pose a "immediate threat to U.S. personnel or territory, or to our allies," but nonetheless demonstrated how unstable North Korea's illegitimate nuclear and missile programs are.North Korea Missile Test The launch coincided with the arrival in South Korea of the nuclear-powered aircraft carrier USS Ronald Reagan and its strike group for joint military drills between the two nations meant to demonstrate their strength against the rising North Korean threat. The director-general for Asian and Oceanian affairs at the Japanese Foreign Ministry, Funakoshi Takehiro, and South Korea's nuclear envoy Kim Gunn spoke on the phone about trilateral cooperation in the face of North Korean threats, according to the foreign ministry of South Korea. Sung Kim is the special representative for North Korea for U.S. President Joe Biden. Although there were no immediate reports of damage, Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida said Tokyo is "doing its utmost" to learn about North Korea's launch and verify the safety of ships and aircraft. When U.S. Vice President Kamala Harris visits South Korea the following week after attending the state funeral in Tokyo for the deceased former Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, the North Korean threat is also anticipated to be a major topic of discussion. More than 30 ballistic weapons, including its first intercontinental ballistic missiles since 2017, have been tested by North Korea in 2022, which has increased its testing activities to a record pace. North Korea is using the UN Security Council's growing division over Russia's invasion of Ukraine to hasten the development of its arsenal.
