Suicide Prevention month: A Big Population At Risk

The month of September is dedicated to suicide prevention, and there has never been a more urgent need for it. The Harris Center for Mental Health and IDD reports that Houston has the greatest rate of suicide deaths among teens and young adults when compared to other age groups. One adult age group is becoming an increasingly at-risk population at the same time. According to James Flowers of the J. Flowers Health Institute, white males between the ages of 40 and 51 commit the most adult suicides. Recently, prominent individuals that meet this demographic have come to light, including Texas Roadhouse founder Kent Taylor in March, former Houston Texans president Jamey Rootes last month, and Bed Bath & Beyond CFO Gustavo Arnal last week. In April, Naomi Judd’s family also said she died by suicide. According to Flowers, successful people might experience high levels of sadness, which may go unnoticed because they frequently attend events and meet deadlines. According to Flowers, there should be less stigma associated with obtaining mental health treatment in the post-COVID era. The smallest signs of despair, anxiety, avoidance, or withdrawal from social or professional activities should be watched for, according to Flowers, who also noted that sometimes people with good functioning could also be suicidal. The new push to seek assistance has also resulted in a shortage of providers because there aren't as many of them available. Getting an appointment could take some time.Suicide Flowers advised coming together and having real conversations with friends, family, and coworkers right away. "Just ask how your day is going, and when you get a response that is not quite regular or typical of their previous responses, ask a little more, "Is there anything I can do to assist out today?"" Flowers remarked. Just feel free to ask for assistance in conversation with friends, family, and coworkers. Talk, talk, talk! Call the crisis line at 9-8-8 if you need assistance right away. Text "home" to 741-741 if you'd rather. There is currently a lot of focus on using yoga, meditation, and exercise to improve wellness. Your mental health can greatly benefit from this. Flowers noted that it's only one component of your overall wellness. If you're suicidal or depressed, you could require more than merely.
