Over the past several months, the selection of smart home items that support Matter has been slowly expanding, but the most recent addition to its lineup may be the most alluring yet. As of April 18, the Nest Thermostat is now compatible with Matter.
The Nest Learning Thermostat and Nest Thermostat E are not included in the fun; only the regular Nest Thermostat (2020) supports Matter. Digital Trends was informed by a Google representative that the company is "still exploring the possibility of Matter compatibility with [the] Nest Learning Thermostat and [is] currently hoping to make it available in the coming year."
The Nest Thermostat (2020) is now the first smart thermostat to support Matter, and it's likely that this will open the door for other products to follow suit.

An automatic, over-the-air update will be used to support Matter on the Nest Thermostat. If you don't already have the function, be sure to check back frequently for the remainder of April as Google will be rolling out the feature in stages over the coming weeks.
You'll be able to control your smart thermostat from any Matter-certified smart home platform once your device has been upgraded. The fact that Apple HomeKit is included is the most intriguing part; given that HomeKit doesn't have the widest range of smart thermostats, this is sure to be wonderful news for houses that use Apple's platform.

In addition to numerous smart screens and smart speakers like the Nest Hub Max and Nest Audio, the Nest Thermostat is the newest Google product to have Matter support. It's fantastic to see Google investing so strongly in Matter, especially at a time when some other businesses are beginning to distance themselves from the interoperability platform.
