As part of its Masters's program, the documentary festival IDFA will screen the global premiere of Coco Schrijber's "Look What You Made Me Do," the international debuts of Barbara Kopple's "Gumbo Coalition," and Martin Scorsese and David Tedeschi's music video "Personality Crisis: One Night Only." Several well-known filmmakers who have reinvented the cinematic language are represented in the list. With "My Imaginary Country," which focuses on the protests in Santiago in October 2019, Patricio Guzmán departs from his poetic style and adopts a more direct, political kind of filmmaking. The first archive-based film directed by Gianfranco Rosi, "In Viaggio," uses the travels of Pope Francis as a metaphor for the state of humanity. "Music for Black Pigeons," a film by Jrgen Leth and Andreas Koefoed that explores aging through jazz music, is their first collaboration as co-directors. At the same time, Ruth Beckermann's "Mutzenbacher" examines a controversial erotic novel through a tough casting call. Other masters continue exploring topics of growing importance while staying faithful to their film languages. With "The Kiev Trial," Sergei Loznitsa provocatively provides a gap in history. In their explosive hybrid feature "Dry Ground Burning," Adirley Queirós and Joana Pimenta throw light on an all-female gang of oil bandits. With various filmmakers offering viewpoints on the nation, Ukraine is consistently represented in the list. First, in "A House Made of Splinters," by Simon Lereng Wilmont, the author examines the characters' tragedies, hopes, and resiliency as they enter a Ukrainian children's home close to the front lines. Next, Igor Ivanko uses his grandfather's old filming techniques to revive the intimate tales from behind the Iron Curtain in "Fragile Memory." Finally, Elwira Niewiera and Piotr Rosolowski assemble a Ukrainian theatrical troupe for "The Hamlet Syndrome" to reproduce the Shakespearean drama in conversation with their horrific reality. As in "Cesária Évora," Ana Sofia Fonseca's ode to the Cape Verde classic, and "Bobi Wine: The People's President," Christopher Sharp and Moses Bwayo's unsettling picture of the budding Ugandan pop star-turned-politician, other movies travel the globe to follow heartfelt stories rich in song and dance. Young women artists and storytellers who transcend all preconceptions electrify the screen in "Beba," the smash hit by Afro-Latinx New Yorker Rebecca Huntt, and "Alis," by Clare Weiskopf and Nicolás van Hemelryck. In addition, both of these films bring up their unique musicality. IDFA will host a special tribute screening of the late director's films "Mariupolis" (2016) and "Mariupolis 2" (2022) as part of the festival in memory of Mantas Kvedaraviius, the Lithuanian filmmaker. They died earlier this year during the Mariupol siege.
