The sensational Sony CFI-1202 model is significant, even though Sony's first important update to the PS5 hardware has mostly gone unnoticed, and Sony isn't talking about it.As per reports, Sony shifted from a custom 7nm AMD Zen 2 CPU to a 6nm counterpart by TSMC called Oberon Plus. Additionally, this switch follows a deconstruction of the most recent model earlier this month, revealing significant internal design changes. However, this has some advantageous side effects for Sony and the lucky customers that manage to obtain a CFI-1202. As a result of the switch to a 6nm chip, the logic transistor density rose by 18.8%, and the die size decreased from 300 square millimeters to just 270 (around 15% less). When taken as a whole, it means the CPU uses less energy and generates less heat, which prompted Sony to design a more compact cooling system. Meanwhile, the minor chip also gives Sony the advantage of making 20% more of them per wafer with only a tiny increase in manufacturing costs.
