This one thing can offer elderly people a better memory and more happiness

As we age, a lot might alter, including our daily routines and sleeping patterns. And a recent study in JAMA Psychiatry found that there are some lifestyle changes we may make as we become older that are linked to both improved cognitive and mental health. Here are the results of the study.

Studying the link between sleep, memory, and happiness

For this study, researchers aimed to examine how older persons' lifestyle choices and activities correlated with various aspects of their health. They did this by having 1,800 adults, who were 73 years old on average, wear wrist monitors for a week in order to gauge their levels of activity. Additionally, the individuals responded to questionnaires that measured their intellect and mental wellness.

What they found

Based on the data, it appears adults who have a "early rising/robust pattern," AKA waking up before 7 a.m. and keeping active during the day, scored better on their cognition evaluations and had better mental health than the participants whose daily schedules were less "robust." The people with the highest rates of cognitive impairment and the highest likelihood of having substantial depressive symptoms were those who were sleeping in later, waking up later, and were less active during the day.Older adult The researchers do point out that these results are correlated and not always an indication of cause and effect. Stephen Smagula, the study's principal investigator, points out that there may be a positive and negative association between sleep, degree of activity, and mental health. (That is, diminished mental health, cognition, or both can affect your sleep, activity, and vice versa.) However, if you choose to look at it, it is undeniable that maintaining an active lifestyle is linked to better physical and mental health outcomes; therefore, this is another more excuse to get moving. Furthermore, "activity" isn't always physical, as the study's authors point out: It might also include doing something mentally challenging, like solving a problem or traveling to a place of worship.
